Berriak Saves 37% on Energy Consumption in its Supermarkets

Berriak Supermarkets, a food retailer with four supermarkets in Spain’s Basque Country, wanted to cut energy use and emissions without affecting customer comfort. Spacewell Energy, using the DEXMA Platform through partner GESE Servicios Energéticos, helped Berriak address rising electricity costs and sustainability goals across refrigeration, bakery, lighting, and power contracts.

Spacewell Energy implemented real-time monitoring and energy management measures, including optimization of refrigeration settings, bakery scheduling, lighting upgrades, and tariff/power adjustments. The results were an annual savings of €20,300, a 120,000 kWh reduction, and a 37% cut in costs, plus 34,000 kg less CO2 emissions; some lighting investments were paid back in two years, and overall payback was shown at about 5.9 months.
