Case Study: City of Malmö improves sustainable urban planning collaboration with Spacemaker

Spacemaker enables easier collaboration for the planning of Elinelund, a new development area in the City of Malmö

The City of Malmö used Spacemaker, an AI-based digital planning tool, to support the detailed planning of Elinelund stage 3, a new 40-hectare development area. The municipality needed to coordinate multiple administrations while balancing housing growth with noise, sunlight, social spaces, school environments, and protection of the nearby Natura 2000 limestone quarry.

With Spacemaker, Malmö’s planners could quickly test and visualize different building layouts, street placements, and building heights, making collaboration easier even during the pandemic. Spacemaker’s simulations helped the team produce noise, wind, and solar studies in days instead of weeks or months, leading to faster decisions, better dialogue with stakeholders, and a more sustainable plan for up to 2,050 homes.
