Los Angeles Community College District builds a 42,000 SF near net-zero facility with Southland Industries

The Los Angeles Community College District required a new maintenance and operations facility for Pierce College that aimed to be California's first near net-zero facility using the design-build method. They partnered with vendor Southland Industries to achieve this ambitious sustainability goal through innovative design and construction.

Southland Industries designed and built the 42,000-square-foot facility, which included a central energy plant. Their solution utilized a solar thermal system with 4,800 evacuated tube collectors and solar absorption chillers for heating and cooling. This approach earned the project LEED Gold certification and it won an Energy Efficiency Partnership Programs Best Practice Award for its substantial energy and CO2 savings.
