A confidential pharmaceutical client required a rapid, turnkey solution to construct a specialized cold storage system for the COVID-19 vaccine as part of Operation Warp Speed. The challenge involved designing and building a large-capacity freezer facility with extremely low temperatures inside an existing warehouse. Southland Industries was engaged to provide design-build services for this critical project.

Southland implemented a design-build approach to deliver a 1,100-pallet storage system featuring a -40° blast freezer and a -20° storage freezer with 100% redundancy. The solution included relocating utilities, integrating all systems with the Building Management System (BMS), and providing validation support. As a result, Southland completed the fast-track project in just six months, enabling the client to swiftly support the initial vaccine response while incorporating future versatility.
