A Southland Industries Case Study
Comcast required mechanical and plumbing systems for its new 60-floor Comcast Technology Center, the tallest building in Pennsylvania. The mixed-use skyscraper needed a flexible and efficient HVAC solution to support its offices, hotel, studios, and retail spaces. Southland Industries was engaged as a design-assist partner to provide this mechanical fit-out.
Southland Industries implemented an innovative approach, utilizing extensive offsite prefabrication for piping racks and chilled beam subassemblies, which drastically reduced on-site labor and waste. Their methods, including just-in-time delivery and advanced field coordination, contributed to the project achieving LEED Platinum certification. As a result, Southland successfully installed approximately 58 linear miles of piping, reduced site-generated waste by 24 dumpsters, and exceeded diversity hiring goals with 20 percent of direct labor completed by women and minority employees.
