A Southland Industries Case Study
The Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, a critical healthcare facility serving a large military community, required a new state-of-the-art hospital to replace its aging structure. The challenge was to design and build a facility that would minimize water usage and maximize energy conservation, a critical need given its central Texas location and susceptibility to drought. Southland Industries provided design-build mechanical and plumbing services to meet this rigorous criteria.
Southland Industries implemented a solution featuring a capture and reuse system for cooling tower wastewater to reduce irrigation demands and a 100 percent direct outdoor air system with energy recovery wheels to save energy. The result was a LEED Gold certified facility that achieved a 55 percent reduction in energy use and a 30 percent reduction in domestic water consumption compared to existing hospitals, successfully delivering a sustainable and modern medical center.
