Southend University Hospital discover Sophos UTM as a natural replacement for Microsoft TMG

Southend University Hospital NHS, a healthcare trust supporting around 5,000 users across roughly 2,900 endpoints and 350 servers, faced an urgent need to replace Microsoft’s retiring Threat Management Gateway (TMG). The IT team of about 40 wanted to consolidate web and download filtering into a single platform to reduce administration overhead and improve consistency. They evaluated multiple vendors and chose Sophos, adopting the Sophos UTM as the replacement.

Sophos UTM was selected for its balance of features, value and a clear development roadmap (bolstered by the Cyberoam acquisition), and was deployed with Foursys assistance. The Sophos solution delivered a coherent security suite for the Trust’s internet access, easier day-to-day administration, faster response to threats, and improved reporting for senior management. Southend University Hospital has since expanded Sophos UTM to its BYOD and guest wireless networks, securing the full ~5,000-user environment and simplifying operational management.
