A Sophos Case Study
The City of Castlegar, a municipal government in British Columbia with 105 users across multiple departments and 25 servers, needed to deliver big‑city levels of cybersecurity on a small budget and with a one‑person IT team. They required an integrated, easy‑to‑manage solution to protect endpoints and servers, reduce help‑desk calls, and minimize downtime from ransomware. The city turned to Sophos, deploying Sophos Central Endpoint Protection, Sophos Intercept X (including Intercept X Advanced for Server), Sophos UTM and Sophos Access Points.
Sophos implemented a centrally managed, multilayered defense—using Sophos Central to manage endpoint, server, network and wireless protections—with Intercept X providing signatureless anti‑malware, exploit prevention and anti‑ransomware capabilities. When a ransomware incident hit a file server, Sophos Intercept X locked down and cleaned the threat in nanoseconds, preventing damage and producing only minimal downtime; the deployment also reduced manual update work and help‑desk calls, freeing the IT manager to focus on higher‑priority tasks while protecting the city’s 105 users and 25 servers.
