JANET(UK) - Customer Case Study

JANET(UK), which manages the UK’s higher-education and research network, faced a severe spam and malware problem that flooded staff inboxes and consumed ICT time. In 2007 JANET(UK) turned to Sophos to replace its gateway protection after employees were still receiving 20–50 unsolicited messages per day, harming productivity and morale.

Sophos deployed two ES4000 Email Appliances (part of Sophos Email Security and Control) at JANET(UK)’s primary and backup sites, using Genotype and Behavioral Genotype protection, automatic updates and a simple management console. The Sophos solution scans up to 80,000 messages per hour, blocks or quarantines roughly 99% of phishing/spam, and now reduces unwanted mail to about 1–2 messages per user while preventing roughly 100,000 unsolicited messages a month, freeing ICT staff from heavy maintenance.
