DATEV’s journey to Clean Code with SonarQube

DATEV, one of Europe’s largest IT service providers with 1,200 developers, a portfolio of 250 products and over 540,000 customers, faced growing complexity from continuous tax-law changes and fragmented tech stacks (mainframe, on‑premise, cloud-native). A top-down “not a single issue” code-quality policy had instead led to widespread issue suppression, so DATEV turned to SonarSource and its SonarQube product to find a unified, practical approach to software quality.

DATEV adopted SonarQube in 2017 and, together with SonarSource, replaced rigid rules with collaborative rule-setting and a DevOps Campus–driven six-month roadmap for cloud migration. The result was a cultural shift to proactive quality: a cleaner codebase, a measurable spike in developer productivity, shorter time-to-market for features, and cloud-native teams able to push all new code without a single issue — demonstrating SonarSource’s tangible impact.
