City West Water, a Victorian government-owned retail water business serving residential and non-residential customers in metropolitan Melbourne, needed to test its highly integrated Gentrack billing, collections and CRM system using past, present and future dates. Because the billing environment runs on a shared Solaris Container server with an Oracle backend, changing the system clock was impractical and risky—affecting other users and risking OS and database stability. To address this, they turned to Solution-Soft’s Time Machine product.

Solution-Soft installed Time Machine on the Solaris 10 server so individual users or groups could be given simulated dates that the Gentrack application reads instead of the real system time. The deployment allowed date-based testing across multiple Solaris Containers without stopping services or impacting other users, significantly increasing testing productivity and saving countless hours for City West Water. Solution-Soft’s solution removed the need for risky system clock changes and reduced the time and coordination previously required for date testing.
