Gdzip Reduces Storage And Bandwidth Requirement For Major European Semiconductor Company

Solution-Soft worked with a major European semiconductor manufacturer that was struggling with rapidly growing GDSII chip design files that consumed large amounts of online storage, slowed transfers between storage and workstations, and lengthened archive and tape-out processes. To address these issues the customer evaluated Solution-Soft’s gdzip compressor to reduce file sizes and ease network bandwidth constraints with foundry and mask shop partners.

After testing gdzip against gzip on nearly 3,000 GDSII files, the customer standardized on gdzip; Solution-Soft’s compressor produced files that were on average three times smaller than gzip and compressed about 1.5 times faster. Replacing gzip calls with gdzip took under four man-hours and delivered measurable benefits: major storage and backup time savings, faster file access and recovery, reduced LAN bandwidth use, and more reliable, quicker tape-outs to partners.
