Case Study: Zymergen modernizes to Kubernetes with Solo.io Gloo

A Solo.io Case Study

Preview of the Zymergen Case Study

Zymergen - Customer Case Study

Zymergen, a science and material innovation company, needed to modernize its cloud-native infrastructure as it moved from monolithic AWS-based applications toward microservices and Kubernetes. With a small central infrastructure team supporting many specialized developers, the company wanted a more programmable, automated approach that would reduce operational complexity and preserve API contracts during the transition. Solo.io’s Gloo API Gateway was a key part of that strategy.

Solo.io helped Zymergen implement Gloo on Amazon EKS alongside Lambda, Flux, Helm, and Kubernetes to create a GitOps-style workflow for provisioning, routing, observability, and traffic control. The platform allowed Zymergen to manage hybrid architectures during migration, automate cluster and gateway setup, and keep services decoupled from infrastructure details. While the case study does not cite hard metrics, Zymergen reported improved scalability for its infrastructure team and a smoother path to finishing its EKS migration.
