The team wanted to standardize common API behaviors like authentication and present one unified Vonage experience, so they began exploring API gateway technology and evaluated Envoy Proxy, Gloo, Kubernetes, and cloud deployment options.

Solo.io’s Gloo API Gateway became the chosen solution because it could integrate with custom authentication services, support flexible request routing and rate limiting, and work across on-prem and cloud environments. Vonage used Gloo to manage Envoy Proxy, first on self-hosted Kubernetes and later as part of a migration to AWS EKS, helping the company reduce the burden of maintaining Kubernetes itself, improve deployment consistency, and scale its API platform more effectively.
