How Overstock.com reduced its Oracle database size by 1TB and achieved dramatic performance improvement

Overstock.com, a fast‑growing online retailer with more than one million products and explosive revenue growth, faced severe IT strain as rapid data expansion clogged its Oracle EBS environment. Applications slowed, queries and maintenance tasks became time‑consuming, disaster recovery and standby systems demanded more space, and expensive SAN upgrades were not a viable long‑term option—yet downtime was not acceptable for the 24/7 business.

Overstock partnered with Solix and deployed the Solix EDMS Archive Module to implement rule‑based archiving of inventory, transactions and custom data with minimal disruption. The initiative removed 1 TB from a 3.4 TB primary database (reducing it to 2.4 TB), produced noticeable performance improvements (including better fourth‑quarter performance), simplified patching and maintenance, provided transparent access to archived data, and set the stage to archive additional data and expand Information Lifecycle Management capabilities.
