How Overstock.com reduced its Oracle database size by 1TB and achieved dramatic performance improvement

Overstock.com, a rapidly growing Salt Lake City–based online retailer with more than a million products, faced a data‑growth crisis that strained its Oracle EBS and other systems: applications became sluggish, queries and maintenance (cloning, patching, DR) grew slow and costly, and high‑performance SANs were prohibitively expensive — all while downtime was not an option.

Overstock partnered with Solix and deployed the Solix EDMS Archive Module to target inventory, transactions and custom data with configurable archiving rules. The solution archived about 1 TB, reducing the live database to 2.4 TB (with another 700 GB identified for archiving), improved fourth‑quarter performance, simplified patching and maintenance, and preserved transparent access to archived data — positioning Overstock for continued growth and broader ILM initiatives.
