Ponsse brings telematics to all new machines since 2021 with Solita

The customer, Ponsse, a global manufacturer of forest machinery, was exploring new ways to enhance data collection from its harvesters and forwarders to improve servicing and maintenance. The challenge was to develop a robust data management structure for its next-generation telematics unit, especially for machines operating in remote locations with limited connectivity. Ponsse turned to the vendor, Solita, to develop this solution using Microsoft Azure IoT Edge computing.

The solution implemented by Solita was a new IoT architecture and data stream for Ponsse's Connectivity Unit. This edge computing solution, built on Microsoft Azure, enabled the machinery to process and store data locally, significantly reducing cloud dependency. The results provided Ponsse with improved accuracy of machine usage data, optimized service procedures, and less downtime. Solita's implementation gave Ponsse the ability to efficiently collect substantial amounts of data and convert it into improved servicing solutions, launching a new era of intelligence in forest harvesting.
