A SolidWorks Case Study
WrightGrid, a start-up that builds outdoor solar cell-phone charging stations, needed to move beyond hand-built prototypes to a durable, attractive, and easily transportable commercial product for parks, campuses, festivals, and retail spaces. To solve engineering and aesthetic challenges while preparing for production, WrightGrid used SolidWorks software—particularly its sheet metal design, fabrication, and flat-pattern capabilities—to refine form, weather resistance, and ease of setup and breakdown.
Using SolidWorks, Mechanical Engineering Lead Sam Feller developed WrightGrid’s fourth-generation charging station, resolved prototype engineering issues, and generated production drawings and bill of materials to support manufacturing. The SolidWorks-based redesign made the product production-ready and easier to manufacture—streamlining collaboration with manufacturing partners who prefer SolidWorks data—and delivered a durable, attractive station that provides free charging to users while serving as a high-visibility advertising and branding platform.
