Waseda University, Humanoid Robotics Institute Advancing humanoid robotics development with SOLIDWORKS Research Software

Waseda University’s Humanoid Robotics Institute (HRI) develops advanced humanoid robots to study human–machine interaction and practical applications such as rescue and assistance. To meet the challenge of designing increasingly complex, lightweight, and tightly integrated mechanical, electrical, and thermal systems efficiently and affordably, HRI adopted the SolidWorks Research Edition (SOLIDWORKS Research software) as its standard 3D design platform.

Using SolidWorks Research software (deployed across 60 licenses), HRI implemented an integrated workflow combining CAD, FEA and CFD to enable concurrent mechanical, electrical, and thermal design and rapid iteration. The result: a three- to fourfold increase in design efficiency, more complex and lighter parts, and the development of more than 20 humanoid robots (including the 28-DOF WAREC-1), accelerating the institute’s research and productization efforts.
