A SolidWorks Case Study
VMI Group, a global leader in car and truck tire production machinery, faced the challenge of streamlining product development to reduce time and cost for highly customized machines. In 2006 VMI Group moved from MicroStation to SolidWorks, adopting SolidWorks design software (with PDM support via CADMES) and SolidWorks Composer to enable 3D design, simplify hiring and training, and reduce engineering errors.
Using SolidWorks, VMI Group created about 200 standardized "building blocks" and managed very large assemblies, enabling roughly 90% of orders to be completed from modules (exceeding the 80% target). SolidWorks improved first‑time accuracy and overall product quality, reduced production hours and costs, and—via SolidWorks Composer—sped up manual creation, lowered translation costs, and shortened documentation lead times.
