TMT Observatory Corp. is leading development of the Thirty Meter Telescope, a globally distributed project with partners in Canada, China, India, Japan, the U.S., and elsewhere that must coordinate complex designs created in many CAD formats. To manage this challenge, TMT selected SolidWorks, deploying SOLIDWORKS design software together with SOLIDWORKS Enterprise PDM to provide an intuitive, flexible modeling environment and centralized product data management.

Using SolidWorks Enterprise PDM and the SOLIDWORKS API, TMT built and maintained a centralized digital mock‑up (DMU), converted and integrated diverse CAD files into a single workflow, automated batch conversions and file processing, and provided secure web access so contributors worldwide could collaborate in multiple shifts. The SolidWorks solution enabled tight revision control for a model of more than 500,000 components, sped collaboration, reduced time required for tasks, and helped keep the project on schedule and on budget.
