Revving up the development of electric automobiles with SolidWorks software

Random Research, Inc., a Portland‑based design consulting firm led by Dennis Palatov, needed a versatile, intuitive 3D CAD platform to support its varied product development and next‑generation electric automobile work. After evaluating options, Random Research selected SolidWorks software to enable rapid, flexible modeling for everything from sheet‑metal and large assemblies to mold development and chassis design.

Using SolidWorks software, Palatov single‑handedly designed, built, and tested the DP1 lightweight all‑wheel‑drive racecar (a 700‑part assembly) for under $150,000 — a program that would typically cost $5–8 million and require a 10–15 person team. SolidWorks tools such as Collision Detection and SimulationXpress reduced prototyping and production costs, enabled novel drivetrain and chassis innovations, and provided a parametric foundation now being adapted to next‑generation electric vehicles.
