Optimizing Emergency Light Lenses and Components With Solidworks Plastics

ECCO, the world’s largest manufacturer of emergency warning products, needed to eliminate mold-related manufacturing issues that were degrading optical lenses and overall product aesthetics. To independently evaluate mold filling and manufacturability during design, ECCO adopted SolidWorks’ SOLIDWORKS Plastics Professional simulation software as part of its SOLIDWORKS development platform.

Using SolidWorks Plastics Professional, ECCO simulated mold filling, optimized part stiffness and flow (adding ribs, runners and sprue features), and deliberately positioned knit lines away from critical optical areas. The result was fewer iterations with the moldmaker, elimination of mold-related production issues, improved lens optics and aesthetics, and measurable time and cost savings through greater confidence in manufacturability.
