Case Study: Myomo restores arm mobility for paralyzed users with SOLIDWORKS

A SolidWorks Case Study

Myomo Develops Custom, Fabricated Devices to Assist Paralyzed Users

Myomo, an MIT spinout, develops the MyoPro — a custom upper‑extremity powered orthosis that helps people with neuromuscular disorders and spinal cord injuries regain arm movement for daily tasks. Facing the challenge of designing patient‑specific, fabricated exoskeletons that meet performance and regulatory requirements, Myomo uses SolidWorks CAD and simulation tools exclusively to model parts, create manufacturing drawings, and tune device fit.

By using SolidWorks to design, simulate, and document every aspect of the MyoPro, Myomo streamlines fabrication from arm cast to finished device, validates designs to reduce weight, and captures the engineering data needed for regulatory approval. The result is a patient‑specific device that enables users to overcome gravity to perform actions like bringing a hand to the face and carry out daily tasks, accelerating development and deployment to patients.
