Improving Orthopedic Care via Additive Manufacturing with SOLIDWORKS

Mecuris, a German company born from University Hospital of Munich research, set out to overturn limited sizing, style, and customization in orthopedic prosthetics and orthoses. Facing the need to scale cost‑effective, patient‑specific devices without the time and expense of traditional custom production, Mecuris leveraged the SOLIDWORKS for Entrepreneurs program and later standardized on SOLIDWORKS Premium to obtain a robust 3D design platform.

By using SolidWorks design configurations and the open SOLIDWORKS API integrated into its online configurator, Mecuris automated parametric design and drove 3D‑printed production. The SolidWorks‑powered workflow produces custom designs in seconds instead of hours or days, reduced production to about 24 hours (versus weeks–months), shortened new product development to 3–4 months, and increased wearer satisfaction while multiplying productivity for orthotists.
