A SolidWorks Case Study
Westport Shipyard, a leader in luxury composite motor yachts, faced growing production challenges as designs moved beyond traditional 2D methods—causing fit/interference issues, long three-to-five-year delivery cycles, and difficulty integrating systems. To address this, Westport evaluated 3D CAD options and chose SolidWorks Professional (SolidWorks) to migrate to a 3D parametric, large-assembly design approach.
Using SolidWorks software (including PDM, eDrawings, and the SolidWorks API) Westport restructured development and production workflows for a 164-foot yacht with more than 30,000 components, automated cabinetry CNC operations, and improved design communications. The SolidWorks-driven solution cut customer delivery time by 75% (bringing lead times down to roughly six months–one year from multi-year schedules), minimized fit/interference problems, and enabled Westport to launch a production-model yacht at unprecedented domestic scale.
