Improving facilities design with SOLIDWORKS and Smap3D plant design software

KLJ, an employee‑owned multidisciplinary engineering and facilities planning firm, needed to increase 3D modeling power, realism, and clarity of communication for factories, plants, and other facilities. To replace time‑consuming 2D workflows, KLJ adopted SolidWorks (SOLIDWORKS Premium and SOLIDWORKS Composer) together with SOLIDWORKS Gold Partner Smap3D Plant Design for P&ID, 3D piping routing, and automated isometric drawing generation.

Using the SolidWorks/Smap3D solution, KLJ expanded 3D workflows to roughly half of its projects, producing realistic renderings, automated isometrics and exploded views, and dramatically shortening the time to make and communicate design changes. For example, reverse‑engineering and redesign of an asphalt plant from point‑cloud capture to documented design took about two weeks, and the automated SolidWorks/Smap3D tools measurably improved documentation accuracy, client comprehension, and approval speed.
