A SolidWorks Case Study
HP faced the challenge of moving designers and manufacturers beyond the limits of traditional tooling — speeding prototyping, cutting costs and making complex, customized parts (like prosthetics) more accessible. To do this HP paired its Multi Jet Fusion 3D printing platforms with design partners, including SolidWorks, so designers could use SolidWorks software to create additive-ready parts and take full advantage of HP’s 300/500 series for rapid prototyping and 4200/4210 systems for large-scale production.
By combining SolidWorks-driven design workflows with HP Multi Jet Fusion printing, customers such as Unlimited Tomorrow can turn 3D scans into tailored prosthetics quickly, reducing prototype turnaround from weeks to days and enabling low-cost production even in remote communities. The results are measurable: the approach targets millions of potential beneficiaries (about 30 million amputees worldwide, only ~5% currently served), lowers reliance on $80,000 legacy devices, and has proven scalable across industries — BMW has printed its millionth 3D part and Volkswagen is adopting HP’s 3D printing roadmap — all enabled through SolidWorks and HP.
