How 3D CAD is revolutionising UK crop farming

Claydon Drills, a Newmarket-based farming equipment manufacturer, needed to design a robust, reliable seed drill that would work in 26 countries across extreme temperatures and varied soils while keeping costs low for farmers. To speed development and improve product visualization they adopted SolidWorks 3D CAD (with reseller Innova Systems) to create detailed models and virtual tests of complex assemblies.

Using SolidWorks, Claydon Drills modelled and load-tested a patented dual-tine seed drill, linked assemblies to ERP part and kit numbers, and optimised production. The result: establishment costs reduced to one-third, sowing speed improved fivefold, production costs cut, and annual revenue growing from roughly £200,000 to £6 million since adopting the software.
