A SolidWorks Case Study
Brigham Young University–Idaho (BYU‑Idaho) faced the challenge of giving its 1,150 mechanical engineering majors a deeper, single‑CAD experience that better prepares graduates for industry. To address this, the university standardized its freshman and sophomore courses on SolidWorks, using SOLIDWORKS Education Edition as the primary 3D design software.
BYU‑Idaho implemented 2,000 SOLIDWORKS Student Engineering Kit licenses and an unlimited number of Student Design Kit licenses, integrated Certified SOLIDWORKS Associate (CSWA) and Certified SOLIDWORKS Professional (CSWP) testing into course grading (students who skip certification cannot exceed a C; CSWA can earn a B; CSWP an A), and enabled students to run the full suite on their laptops. The SolidWorks deployment deepened CAD skills, expanded internship and employment opportunities (supporting BYU‑Idaho’s large online/Pathway population of students), and gave graduates marketable, employer‑requested credentials.
