GRIT Helps the Disabled in Developing Countries Gain Mobility

GRIT (Global Research Innovation & Technology) addresses the challenge that more than 20 million people in developing countries need wheelchairs but find standard models unusable on rough, uneven roads and prone to breaking. GRIT developed the Leveraged Freedom Chair (LFC), a wheelchair with a unique lever drivetrain made from bicycle parts that lets users travel over 80% faster than a standard wheelchair and be repaired with locally available components.

Using SolidWorks Standard, GRIT built detailed models and drawings of the LFC that could be easily shared with manufacturers in India, enabling scalable production and collaboration. SolidWorks helped GRIT design for sustainability and innovation, accelerating partnerships and delivering measurable impact—faster, more durable mobility solutions that improve access to education and employment for people with disabilities.
