Fusion Guitars - Customer Case Study

Fusion Guitars set out to build the world’s first smart electric guitar—an all‑in‑one instrument with integrated amp, speakers, battery and an iPhone dock to let musicians play anywhere. The main challenges were creating an elegant organic body that fits the neck and electronics, minimizing design iterations, and preparing the product for manufacture. Founder Dave McAuld used SolidWorks (SOLIDWORKS) for surfacing, parametric 3D modeling and engineering documentation to address these challenges.

Using SolidWorks’ surfacing features and the ability to import 3D scan meshes, Fusion Guitars developed full-scale models, iterated designs, ran FEA, and produced manufacturing drawings and renderings within a single toolchain. The outcome was a successful Indiegogo launch with more than 1,000 instruments pre-sold, a Best Design Award in Consumer Electronics (Australia), and a market‑ready, category‑redefining smart guitar.
