Diving Into New Underwater Enclosure Markets With Solidworks Solutions

Watershot, Inc., a San Diego–based maker of watertight camera housings for professional underwater photographers and filmmakers, faced the challenge of growing into emerging consumer markets (notably smartphone enclosures) while reducing development time and errors. To accelerate product development and ensure pressure-resistant designs, Watershot adopted SolidWorks, using SolidWorks Premium for CAD and SolidWorks Simulation for FEA-driven analysis.

By leveraging SolidWorks’ integrated design and simulation tools, Watershot cut design cycles in half, minimized errors and physical prototyping, and resolved issues like touch‑screen deflection in an iPhone 4 enclosure without major tooling changes. The SolidWorks-enabled process expanded Watershot, Inc.’s product line into smartphone housings (models rated to 40–60 m), LED lighting, deep‑sea drilling heads, and the first dedicated ALEXA digital camera enclosures—delivering faster time‑to‑market and measurable cost and time savings.
