A SolidWorks Case Study
Southmedic, Inc., a designer and manufacturer of surgical and specialty operating room products, faced limits with its legacy 2D CAD workflow and needed a more reliable, robust 3D system to take products from concept through manufacturing and tooling faster and to support more complex plastics design and better communication with OEM partners. After evaluating several packages, Southmedic selected SolidWorks 3D CAD software to provide intuitive parametric modeling, visualization, and integration with engineering tools.
Using SolidWorks software, Southmedic developed the OxyArm Predictable Oxygen Delivery System—the first “open” oxygen delivery system—completing the design in about three months and shortening the design cycle by an estimated 30–40%. SolidWorks’ parametric features, FeatureManager-driven associative updates, realistic rendering and export capabilities accelerated design and tooling changes, improved capacity for complex parts and rapid prototyping, and enabled effective collaboration with vendors and partners, delivering measurable productivity gains.
