Creating robotic cranes to clean up Chernobyl contamination with SolidWorks

PaR Systems, a long-established manufacturer of gantry robots and robotic crane systems that handle hazardous and radioactive materials, faced increasing design complexity and market pressure to shorten lead-times—including delivery of cranes for the Chernobyl cleanup. To move from 2D wireframe tools into a fully integrated 3D workflow, PaR adopted SolidWorks solutions (Standard/Professional/Premium CAD, Simulation Professional, Enterprise PDM/Workgroup PDM, SolidWorks Composer, and DraftSight).

PaR implemented the SolidWorks integrated suite and migrated over 100,000 files into SolidWorks Enterprise PDM, uniting five engineering locations under a single revision scheme. The SolidWorks solution cut a large assembly open time from 90 minutes to 15, saved each engineer about an hour per week searching for files, eliminated 2D and part-search costs, improved collaboration and design reuse, and enabled PaR to meet shorter lead-times while delivering reliable, low‑service cranes for the Chernobyl project.
