A SolidWorks Case Study
Turku University Of Applied Sciences partnered with Fastems to give students real-world manufacturing experience by developing a fully functional 1:10-scale flexible manufacturing system for trade shows. The project required extensive remodelling, validation, and production of sheet metal and machined parts and posed challenges in simulating small-scale mechanical elevators and forklifts. To meet these needs the university used SolidWorks Education Edition, including SolidWorks Simulation, Enterprise PDM, eDrawings, and PhotoView 360.
Using SolidWorks, the student team designed, simulated, managed and rendered the prototype: SOLIDWORKS Simulation verified structural strength and motion, EPDM enabled collaboration and file sharing for more than 20 students, and PhotoView produced marketing-quality visuals. The result was the first functional scale FMS model delivered on time, reusable SOLIDWORKS models that speed subsequent development, improved student employability and program optimization, and demonstrable time savings in production and collaboration thanks to SolidWorks.
