Advancing High-performance Titanium Wheelchair Design With SolidWorks Software

TiSport, LLC, a designer and manufacturer of high-performance titanium wheelchairs, needed to automate the design and manufacture of highly customized chairs to hold down costs and shorten delivery times. After evaluating options, TiSport selected SolidWorks—implementing SolidWorks 3D CAD and SolidWorks Simulation (and integrating CAMWorks for CAM)—to provide an integrated, easy-to-use 3D product development and manufacturing environment.

Using SolidWorks, TiSport automated design configurations via design tables, linked designs directly to machining, and used SolidWorks Simulation to validate design and material changes (for example, switching to a composite footplate). SolidWorks helped cut design time in half, lowered annual development costs by $400,000, saved $11 in manufacturing cost per chair, reduced returns to about 0.5%, and enabled TiSport to scale custom production and become a leading lightweight titanium wheelchair maker.
