Adding green locks to green buildings with SOLIDWORKS® Sustainability

ASSA ABLOY Sicherheitstechnik GmBH needed to add sustainable design practices and provide Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for its door and locking systems to meet customer demand for green‑building certifications. The company selected SOLIDWORKS Sustainability (with SOLIDWORKS Simulation) from SolidWorks to generate life‑cycle assessment (LCA) data and evaluate environmental impacts of existing and redesigned products.

Using SOLIDWORKS Sustainability and SOLIDWORKS Simulation, ASSA ABLOY redesigned a door‑locking mechanism—reducing the number of materials, replacing nickel‑ and chrome‑plated parts with stainless steel, slimming components, and changing assembly methods—which cut manufacturing costs by 15%, reduced material usage and environmental impact, and revealed clear carbon and energy savings. The SOLIDWORKS tools produced the LCA figures that enabled these changes and launched ASSA ABLOY’s work toward an EPD generator in partnership with PE International.
