A Solid Edge Case Study
Tokamak Energy, a private company developing compact spherical tokamaks with high‑temperature superconducting magnets, faced the challenge of designing and manufacturing the complex ST40 device to demonstrate fusion energy gain. The project required extreme precision across thousands of parts, novel joint and sensor designs, and the ability to iterate virtual prototypes to solve assembly and manufacturing constraints. To meet these demands Tokamak Energy adopted Solid Edge software (implemented with partner OnePLM) for 3D design and simulation.
Using Solid Edge’s parametric modeling, assembly management and simulation tools, the team reused design data, validated structural and vibration performance, and visualized build sequences before physical assembly. Solid Edge enabled rapid updates and collaboration—reducing decision times from days to minutes—while ensuring first‑time fit and identifying issues early. The result: accelerated development of the 50‑ton ST40 (over 300 assemblies and ~48,000 parts including ~2,000 unique components), confirmed design integrity through analysis, and greater product development agility.
