A Solid Edge Case Study
Waldis, a Swiss safe manufacturer, faced rising break-ins and the need to meet strict VdS/EN 1143-1 certification requirements, so after a 2006 ownership change they decided to redevelop their product line from the ground up. In searching for a design tool they selected Solid Edge (Siemens Digital Industries Software) for its 2D/3D CAD capabilities and intuitive workflow to accelerate redesign and collaboration.
Using Solid Edge’s 3D and synchronous technology, Waldis developed a modular new product family (launched in 2009) with standardized resistance grades 2–5, heights from 550–1,500 mm and more than 20 variants. The solution enabled efficient variant design, collision detection and collaborative iteration—only one part was reused from the prior series—and assemblies of 80–200 components (≈300 MB) are processed quickly on HP Z620 workstations. Solid Edge helped Waldis streamline development, increase parts commonality and deliver higher-security safes backed by a 20-year break‑in warranty.
