Gdańsk University of Technology uses Siemens Digital Industries Software solution to teach cutting-edge skills in boat design

Gdańsk University of Technology in Poland faced the challenge of designing competitive, solar‑powered racing boats and training students in modern boat‑design skills despite limited funding and early, largely handmade design methods. To modernize its design process and teach cutting‑edge CAD, the university adopted Solid Edge software from Siemens Digital Industries Software to create parametric 3D models and technical documentation for boat components and assemblies.

Using Solid Edge, the student team produced detailed parametric models, assemblies and comprehensive drawings that enabled the development of third‑generation boats; the Solid Edge‑designed two‑person boat launched in 2010 proved highly competitive (the case cites a “winning boat” designed with Solid Edge). Solid Edge also allowed students and faculty to install the software on personal computers for extended practice, improving student skills, employability and the team’s on‑water performance.
