A Solid Edge Case Study
Auburn University’s Formula SAE team faced a typical FSAE challenge: an educational motorsports timeline with only about three months to design every part, many returning freshmen with no CAD experience, and a constant need to reduce weight while iterating parts down to nuts and bolts. To overcome the steep learning curve and tight schedule they adopted Solid Edge, an easy-to-use CAD solution that enabled self-teaching, rapid part modeling, and improved data sharing across team sections.
Using Solid Edge, the team was able to accelerate design iterations, improve cross-team data integration, and optimize their chassis—reducing the space frame weight by 10 lbs. while achieving a 65% gain in torsional stiffness. The improved workflow and performance helped Auburn University earn its best-ever finish (2nd place) at the Formula SAE event in Lincoln, Nebraska and secure multiple awards.
