A Solid Edge Case Study
AMF Canada, a Canadian designer and manufacturer of customized baking and bottle-washing equipment, was losing profitability and risking late deliveries because design errors in its 2D AutoCAD process required rework and frequent overtime. After an unsuccessful try with SolidWorks, AMF sought an easy-to-use solid modeling solution that could be adopted gradually and preserve legacy AutoCAD drawings and macros, and chose Solid Edge 3D CAD from Siemens Digital Industries Software.
Using 15 licenses of Solid Edge and a five-day reseller-led training, AMF implemented a hybrid 2D/3D workflow that retained BOM and legacy data while enabling virtual assemblies (one new oven assembly contained ~10,000 parts). Solid Edge’s virtual modeling improved drawing clarity, let designers find and fix errors before parts were made, shrank design time, reduced rework, and enabled on-time deliveries without overtime costs—boosting productivity, quality, and the company’s ability to attract younger engineers.
