University of East Anglia enables many queued climate simulations with Software Sustainability Institute

The University of East Anglia faced challenges with its Community Integrated Assessment System (CIAS) portal, which was limited to running a single climate simulation at a time and required constant monitoring. The system was also difficult to replicate and had poor search functionality for previous research. The university engaged the Software Sustainability Institute to improve the portal's capabilities and accessibility.

The Software Sustainability Institute implemented a batch queueing system to allow multiple simulations to run simultaneously and worked iteratively to create a documented installation procedure for replicating the portal. They also upgraded the internal Bespoke Framework Generator to enable new types of simulations with feedback loops and added visualization tools. As a result, the University of East Anglia achieved higher throughput, made entirely new climate simulations possible, and can now share the CIAS code with external researchers.
