Water companies detect leaks, reduce costs with Telstra & Software AG

Telstra, Australia’s leading telecommunications and technology company, responded to growing pressure on water utilities to cut water and energy waste, address ageing infrastructure and avoid regulatory and reputational risk. Leaks, poor metering and tampering—exemplified by high-profile incidents and long pipelines—made end-to-end network visibility and real-time monitoring critical for utilities facing sustainability and operational challenges.

Telstra partnered with Software AG to deploy Cumulocity IoT (Solution Accelerator for Water Management) plus analytics tools (Apama, Zementis, TrendMiner) and ran field trials with Busselton Water, installing digital meters and Captus IoT devices to measure pressure, flow and temperature for real-time leak detection and smarter pumping. Early results show up to 20% leakage reduction, 15% energy cost savings and 10–35% reductions in per‑capita consumption, with further rollouts and a customer portal planned.
