A Software AG Case Study
The University of Leipzig, founded in 1409 with about 30,000 students across 14 faculties, needed to better align teaching with industry demands—especially in fast-growing areas like Service‑Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Business Process Management (BPM). The challenge was to move beyond theory, give students real-world experience, and prepare graduates to meet changing employer requirements.
Since 2009 the university partnered with Software AG (providing a €3 million software donation and ARIS-based project packages) so students could work on a semester-long, practice‑oriented SOA/BPM project simulating a company modernizing legacy systems. Supported by “cookbooks” and company mentors, students built a browser-based application, gained professional skills, earned external recognition from regional officials, reported strong learning outcomes, and the university continues to expand the collaboration.
