Swinburne University takes IoT to the Nth degree

Swinburne University of Technology’s Manufacturing Futures Research Institute and IoT Lab teamed with industry to tackle the complex inbound milk supply-chain problem for Bega Cheese: milk spoils quickly and the supply chain needed real‑time visibility, better forecasting and more efficient pick‑up logistics. The university sought an agile, scalable IoT partner to integrate research-grade sensors and analytics with commercial supply‑chain operations across hundreds of farms.

Swinburne, Software AG (Cumulocity IoT, IoT Edge, Streaming Analytics, Machine Learning) and Optus deployed sensors on farms and trucks to monitor milk quantity, temperature and quality, plus proximity and event sensors for dynamic scheduling. The solution enabled live monitoring, accurate supply forecasting, reduced milk wastage and unnecessary transport, and improved processing efficiency — all on a platform that can scale to many more suppliers while supporting further IoT research and industry use.
