Preview of the Large Oil & Gas Industry Case Study

Strategic IT planning leads to million-dollar savings

A global oil and gas company with 85,000 employees and more than $300 billion in revenue faced a tangled IT landscape built up over decades of mergers and business-unit silos: roughly 8,000 applications costing over $600 million to operate and no consistent multi-year roadmap despite more than $1 billion in annual technology spend. The challenge was to optimize IT investments, simplify the legacy application estate, increase business–IT collaboration and align spending to strategic goals.

The enterprise architecture team created a “Bill of IT,” mapped applications to business processes, and used Alfabet as a central repository to define target states, road maps and performance metrics with input from 300+ stakeholders. The program delivered immediate results—about $13 million saved in year one, a 7% reduction in applications, and 85% of IT asset investment aligned to strategy—improving transparency, capital efficiency and risk management.
