Companhia de Electricidade de Macau (CEM) is Macau’s sole electricity utility, serving more than 255,000 customers since 1972. As CEM moves into the IoT era—with plans for advanced metering, electric vehicle charging networks and new digital payment and customer-service channels—it faced the need to integrate modern front-end systems with legacy back-end infrastructure, “lift and shift” replaceable legacy systems, and accelerate new business models without disrupting operations.

CEM selected Software AG’s webMethods Digital Business Platform and Global Consulting Services, running a six‑month pilot to validate integration capabilities. The platform delivered on time and on budget, enabling rapid integration of best‑in‑class front‑end apps, supporting the Advanced Metering System pilot (2,000 homes, scalable to 200,000), EV charging initiatives, and real‑time payments like MacauPay—resulting in faster time to market, improved services, lower costs and a more agile, IoT‑ready utility.
