Meeting London’s Bus Emissions Goals With the Power of an Iot Platform

Sensor-Technik Wiedemann (STW) is a Bavarian specialist in telemetry and electrification for mobile machines that was tapped to help London meet its Ultra Low Emission Zone targets. The challenge was real-time monitoring and centralized recording of NOx and particulate (PM) emissions across a bus fleet spanning thousands of vehicles—enabling compliance with strict 2020 emission goals and tracking nearly 5 billion passenger journeys annually.

STW deployed its TC1 telematics and the Cumulocity-based STW machines.cloud IoT platform to integrate CANbus, sensor and GPS data, transmitting live cloud updates (every ~2 minutes) and centrally storing records for compliance. By retrofitting over 150 buses and scaling toward the full fleet, the system delivered real-time dashboards, predictive maintenance and automatic alerts—helping buses cut particulates by 99% and NOx by 90% while providing a scalable, vendor‑neutral foundation for future analytics and machine learning.
